Devonport Community House is currently looking to recruit an experienced, committed Community Activator, based in Auckland, covering the catchment area of Devonport Peninsula, Hauraki, Belmont, and Bayswater communities, to create opportunities for grassroots community development activity.
The vision of the House is to be a place that fosters community. It’s purpose is to enhance social and cultural well-being by providing accessible and affordable opportunities for people of all ages, cultures and interests to come together in a safe and supportive environment.

Mō te tūnga | The role
Reporting to the Community House Manager, your role will leverage the Community House’s networks, programming, and partnerships to reach out into the wider community and fulfil the local board’s community delivery strategy.
You will focus on building strong relationships with community partners and members to create opportunities for community development actions in the area. Your work will focus on building community connection, mindfulness and resilience while keeping in mind strong sustainability practices and the importance of community at the forefront of a circular, zero waste economy.
Your responsibilities will include:

You will need to be a committed practitioner with demonstrated experience in community development as a community activator or adjacent role. You will have great interpersonal and communication skills and have worked cross culturally. You will have an initiative-taking approach to problem-solving and strong prioritisation and time management skills.

- Working closely with our community and partners to inform our practice and initiatives.
- Co-designing, implementing, and evaluating local initiatives.
- Providing effective leadership to stakeholders, particularly regarding the delivery of agreed actions and initiatives.
- Assisting our partners with the planning, promotion and roll out of agreed activations.
- Managing multiple and competing priorities effectively.
- Collaborating with the activator in the Raki (North) catchment of the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board.

You will need to be a committed practitioner with demonstrated experience in community development as a community activator or adjacent role. You will have great interpersonal and communication skills and have worked cross culturally. You will have an initiative-taking approach to problem-solving and strong prioritisation and time management skills.
Other key skills and qualities required to be a success as a community activator:
- Good organisational and administrative skills and strong budget management skills
- Strong service ethic
- Resilient and resourceful, solutions focussed with a growth mindset
- Ability to prioritise and work autonomously
- High emotional intelligence, great communication skills, and the ability to build strong internal and external relationships
- Skilled in stakeholder management
- Good facilitation and presentation skills
- Digitally competent, including in the use of Xero, Google Drive and Microsoft Office applications
- Culturally responsive, some knowledge of tikanga Māori and te reo Māori would be advantageous and a willingness to embrace and strengthen your cultural knowledge and connections
- Full NZ driver’s licence (own vehicle desirable)
- Not-for-profit experience (desirable)
- You might have a degree in a relevant area of expertise - Education, Health or Social Sciences, Community Development
